About the artist:
Fannie Lou Bennett Spelce (1908–1998) was an American folk artist from Dyer, Arkansas, who became known for her detailed and nostalgic paintings of small-town Southern life. After retiring from a 42-year nursing career, she began painting full-time, creating nearly 500 works. Despite being discouraged early on, she found success when her son introduced her work to the Kennedy Galleries in New York. Spelce's art, characterized as "primitive" but highly precise, captured the charm and simplicity of rural life and continues to be appreciated in Southern folk art circles.
